Greek oops, new version 1.2.2
October 21st, 2009
My appologies to those who have downloaded the previous version (1.2.1). I made a silly mistake. The Watchtower.framework build for version 1.2.1 does not have the native Copy patch. This means that those who have Greek keyboard support working will also find that unfortunately Ctrl+C does not work.
New version 1.2.2 includes the native clipboard patch. My bad. I’m not quite sure how I managed to miss that. I was upgrading Wine versions for the new release and somehow managed to skip the Copy patch. Guess my subtitle is coming true: Sorry for the inconvenience! There have only been 118 downloads thus far for that versions, so hopefully not too much inconvenience created.
How to upgrade
Download, install the new framework (1.1.31) and drop the new app into Applications.

Great job, no longer need to run Virtualization programs in order to run the WT Library.

Thanks for new version. I use Finnish language version of WtLib, but I have little problem with scandinavian characters (ä,ö and å). I can’t type these characters for search field. Is there any workaround for this? Thanks!

Hi Roy, I have just installed the Greek WT Lib but I cannot use the accented greek characters in the search field (i.e. ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?).
Typically, to produce, say, the accented ‘?’ you have to press ”;” followed by “?”; the first keystroke enters the accent, waiting for the second keystroke, the vowel. Within X11, however, this only results in ”;?”.
Also: I have installed both the english and greek libraries, side by side. Within the greek search field I can type in greek (with the above caveat). When I go to the english one, anything I type shows in greek, still.
Any ideas?
Many thanks!

Regarding your first problem Alex, it seems I can add the accent by pressing semi-colon. X11 does not give you any immediate feedback as in native Mac, it’s true. However if I press semi-colon then say e, it gives me Greek epsilon with an acute accent over the top. Are you using the plain Greek keyboard, or polyphonic?
Your second question concerns switching keyboards. In its current state, Wine only tests and configures the keyboard on boot-up. This means that the language configuration it sees when you launch Watchtower Library for Mac is the one-and-only configuration for that session. If Greek, you get Greek for everything. Wine does not integrate with the Mac’s keyboard directly. It goes through X11, which itself does not integrate well with the Mac keyboard sub-system.
To cut a long story short, you may need to dance a little jig (metaphorically speaking) to obtain the results you want. It will require running two virtual Windows systems. One for your Greek keyboard; the other for English.

Dear Jussi, I’ve ran some tests with the Finnish keyboard layout. As far as I can tell, everything seems to work. Although I have a British keyboard, I can select the Finnish diacriticals using ”=” and “]” which correspond to acute accent and umlaut respectively.
One thing to note as important: you cannot switch keyboard layout after running Watchtower Library for Mac. Could that be the problem? Alternatively, if you are just using the Finnish keyboard, could you enable the Keyboard Viewer and check the key mappings.

Hi Roy, thank for your help. I haven’t changed keyboard layout, so it’s the Finnish layout. I enabled Keyboard Viewer and made little video of this problem. Please, check it from http://www.screencast.com/t/4VXMvAehD

Good idea, Jussi. I’ve watched your video clip. I can see the problem. However, when I do the same thing, the characters do appear. Finnish works with a UK keyboard. That doesn’t make sense. So how to work out why no Finnish at your end? I’ll need to think about that. How to diagnose the problem…

it is the happiest day of my life, finding this .dmg. Thank you so much!!! Greetings from Greece!!

Hi Roy, I tried to try (!) your suggestion above re: greek accented vowels, but for some reason WTLib stopped running. I suspect it could be something to do with me trying to install a number of other Windoze apps using your solution; I really don’t know.
So what I’ve done is tried to remove everything related to the whole installation, and start over. I have now got stuck to the point where I keep re-installing from your .dmg files, but when all is done I click on WTlib in my Dock, it bounced a couple of times, then stops. Any chance I can REALLY uninstall everything, then install from scratch?
When I first installed it some days ago, all worked. Now nothing works. It’s my bad, but I’m sure I’m missing something simple.
Many thanks, as always.

Thanks Antonis, Hope it works for you!
Alex, I’ve posted an uninstallation walkthrough here. Hope that helps you get back on track.

It’s so baffling. I’ve followed the instructions to uninstall all components. I still end up with a Watchtower Library app which bounces a couple of times, then quits. I’ll give it a try from a different user account to see if it persists. Just as well I’ve got the MacMini running, as it’s the meeting night and have got a part to prepare tonight!
Note: MacBook Pro is on 10.5.7; MacMini’s on 10.6.0. Not that this explains anything…

Hi Roy, How I can use WINEDEBUG-option to run Watchtower Library.app? (I have use this method on Linux, but I don’t know how to use this on Mac OS X). I think WINEDEBUG=keyboard could give some information of Finnish keyboard problem.

Dear Jussi,
You can pass keyboard debug options by running
WINEDEBUG=+keyboard,+key open -a Watchtower\ LibraryDebug messages will appear in the Console log. Hope you can track it down.

Thanks! I did some test, but I don’t understand debug messages very well. I can send messages if it would help. But most important is that it’s works if I start application with command line option: LANG=fi_FI open -a Watchtower\ Library (but LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8 …. does’t work).
