Snow Leopard to Leopard (in)compatibility
November 2nd, 2009
I met up with Jens Isoaho in northern Sweden (Finnish congregation) via iChat this morning. Thanks for your kind assistance Jens!
He’s running on Leopard 10.5 with the same problems as many have been seeing. The app crashes with a report about “unknown required load command 0×80000022”. It’s looking like a developer tools issue. I build Watchtower Library for Mac using the latest developer tools from Apple on a Snow Leopard box. Despite compiling the software against 10.5 SDK, there is something going awry.
Until I figure out where exactly the problem lies and how to fix it, Jens and I have found out the following steps to put you back on track.
Solution for Leopard 10.5 users
So here’s a fix until I iron out the incompatibilities. Run version 1.2; this version was built on Leopard.
Delete the old framework first
Navigate in Finder to /Library/Frameworks and delete the folder called Watchtower.framework. Drag it to Trash.
(The framework package does not downgrade. This won’t be an issue in future versions since the framework embeds within the app bundle.)
Download and install version 1.2
Download here if you do not already have 1.2. Install the framework, having deleted the old first in the previous step. Drag the app to Applications. It should now launch and run normally.
Assumptions
I assume that these problems effect 10.5 users only, but is my assumption correct? Has anyone seen crashing issues on 10.6?

Hi! I installed on my MacBook Pro (which is a “mirror” of my iMac), had som errors, uninstalled an reinstalled and all of a sudden it worked! Nice!
But it just won’t work on my iMac :-( In the first error message I see the sentence:
Dyld Error Message: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libXfixes.3.dylib Referenced from: /Applications/Watchtower Library.app/Contents/MacOS/../Frameworks/XServer.framework/Versions/A/XServer Reason: image not found
Then I rememebered, that I did not install X11 while upgrading to Snow Leopard. I have now installed it, but it won’t work as well. Now I’ve got another error message. As I can’t attach it here, pls write to my e-mail adress, if you want me to send it to you. I’m so unhappy that it won’t work on my iMac – hope you’ll be able to guide me to a solution.
Brotherly regards Steffen (Sweden)

Dear Steffen, Sorry about the problems with your iMac. So, you’re running 10.6, same as myself; you should therefore be able to run version 1.2.3 without problems (he said). Have you tried this latest version? If you have problems, it might be better to file a support or bug issue. That way you can upload files, screenshots, and I can keep all the material together more easily.

Just installed 1.2.3 under 10.6.1 on my MacBook Pro 17”. No problems yet. Let me know when i have to do a test or something. Love to help!

I just upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The WTLIB load slower than before (Version 1.2)

Thanks Sander. Do you have a Leopard machine? It needs testing on 10.5 really. Good to know that other 10.6 machines also have no problem.
Thanks too, Markus. It should be faster at launching after the initial launch. Wine quietly updates the virtual Windows system.

Thanks for your comments Rolf. Not quite sure what you mean when you say “I’d like to know how this is working”!
Please follow the instructions on the home page of this website (click on Title at top of page) under the posting dated 31st August 2009 and entitled ‘Watchtower Library for Mac v1.2.
If you are still having problems, please let us know.

Hi again! I checked the version number, and to my surprise I had 1.2! I’m quite sure I downloaded 1.2.2. But of course: I downloaded some different files when it wouldn’t work, so I seemed to end up with an older version (but 1.2.2 didn’t work either when I first tried it). Anyway – I saw that yesterday you posted 1.2.4, so I downloaded that new version. And Voila! – everything works fine! Beatiful!
One little thing: Every time I want to shut down the program, a box comes up: Are you really sure you want to…? I find that a bit annoying – how about make it an option under Properties if it should ask or not?
Thanks alot for this wonderful program! Keep up the good work!

Steffen and Haymon, That’s good. So Snow Leopard running fine. Is anyone running Leopard having issues, or running fine?

We just got our first Mac last night so I’m probably doing something wrong as I’m learning . . . but I’m having some trouble. I installed the framework, started the CD, installer starts fine, but at a certain point the CD stops spinning and everything just sits with no progress. After about 10 minutes, I forced it to quit. Should I have waited longer? (We have a Mac mini, 2 gig RAM, Snow Leopard).

David, Thanks for the report.
Vanessa, I recommend using version 1.2.5; you don’t need the framework. It shouldn’t take that long to install regardless. It sounds a bit like a CD problem. Do you have another CD you could try out? I’m guessing though! It’s worth looking at the Console log to see if there are any useful messages.

Wow, you were spot on. Worked perfectly. You have no idea how much this means to us to have this. A million thank yous!

Hi Roy. It works perfect on my MacBook Pro running 10.6.2. I have been waiting for such an App since start using MAC 5 years ago. Now I can finally trash my last Winows machine! THANKS a lot.

Hi there Roy, thank you so much for this great piece of work.
I installed X11 and the watchtower framework, but the icon watchtower library icon has a slash sign over it before and after moving it to the applications folder. When I attempt to launch, it says, “you can’t open the application watchtower library because it is not supported on this architecture.” I am running 10.5.8 on my powerbook G4. Is this because it is not an intel chip? Any ideas?
Thank you!

Dear Jud, It does not run on G4-based Macs. Sorry about that.

Hi Roy, I successfully installed the ‘09 WT Library on my own Mac. Now I’m trying to install a friend’s. I couldn’t get the install to work so I purchased a Mac OSX Snow Leopard upgrade for her. I still cannot get the WT CD Library installed. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I did the download from your web site and dragged into Applications. I put in the WT CD and nothing happens. Can I possibly call you for assistance? I included my email address for you. Thank you!

Jenny, Unfortunately your email address hasn’t shown up in your post. You can iChat Roy, who is very happy to help, on AIM as
royratcliffeor on Jabber as royratcliffe@jabber.org.March 19th, 2010 at 05:18 PM
Dear Jenny, You don’t mention running the app. Could that be the missing step?
April 11th, 2010 at 02:03 AM
Hi Roy, Installed this successfully on my Imac Snow Leopard on an intel Mac. In helping a friend install it I have issues. She has a Macbook, 1.83ghz intel core 2 duo, with 2gb of ram. We did a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 as she had been running Tiger and Crossover stopped working. I installed your program version 1.3, ran it, installed WT library OK (i got installed successfully message), however when I click the icon to open, nothing happens, WT LIbrary never opens. I did install x11 from the SL install disk and it works fine. Also, we are using an official WT disc. Any other suggestions to get this working? MUCH appreciated. I thought upgrading to SL would fix this…

As a followup, I borrowed another friends’ cd-rom and uninstalled everything then re-downloaded and installed 1.3, then used this other cd-rom and it worked! I guess this backs up the theory on glitchy cd-roms, even if official. Thanks again Roy for your hard work and personal assistance!

Roy: Ha-ha! You’re welcome, but you’re too kind. I was merely a spectator, amazed by your computer skills. Nevertheless I’m glad that I was able to help at that time(a little late to respond;D) and I’d like to thank you once again for the time and effort you have put in this software.

Dear Reb, Glad it worked out in the end. Yes, it’s strange but true: the official CD-ROMs sometime are faulty.
