Pre-release version 1.2.4
November 5th, 2009
UPDATE! Please use later version 1.2.5.
Since upgrading my build machine to Snow Leopard 10.6, quite a few users have reported crashing issues when running on Leopard. Version 1.2 of Watchtower Library for Mac was compiled on a Leopard machine, but later versions on Snow Leopard (starting at version 1.2.1).
I started working on improvements for Greek keyboard support and limitations on number of library editions running at once. I managed to fix both problems, but along the way introduced a new one.
Apologies
It was a mistake with my compile tools options for Wine and its dependencies when running on 10.6. Sorry!
Geek moment: Skip this boring bit, if you don’t want the unnecessary details. The problem I found was with the linker options. LDFLAGS (loader flags) passed to GNU auto-tools needed to include the SDK specification, i.e.
-
-isysroot/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5 -
-mmacosx-version-min=10.5
Without these in LDFLAGS, only in CFLAGS, the make tools compile for 10.5 but link against 10.6, the default. Result? Launch failure.
Try out version 1.2.4
Please try out this latest version. I’m really interested in hearing from users running on Leopard especially. Does it run without issue? You can find the download in the usual Files location, or direct link here.
Embedded framework
Along the way, I’ve embedded the framework within the app. Hence you no longer need to install a framework. All the Unix bits and pieces live in a fully relocatable way within the app bundle. Delete the app, you delete the framework too. This simplifies the installation procedure and obviates any version mismatch problems.
If it works out, I’ll bump 1.2.4 to version 1.3 and do another Disk Image.

I seem to be having a problem with the install and cant figure out what the problem is. I can get the WTLib program to ope but when I insert the WT CD nothing happens… it does not run through the intstall? Any reason why this could be?

If you are using a copy of the original, it may not recognise it. Try dragging the
Setup.exefile to the dock icon to manually launch Setup.November 5th, 2009 at 05:50 PM
Still seem to have the problem, I also followed the install video, unistalled tried 1.2.4 and it boots up but the install just wont work. Thanks so much for the help

Dear Derrick, Mmm. Puzzling. I can think of two approaches to helping you (which I’m keen to do). First, file an issue and we can try to thrash out the trouble by posting logs and tracing down the cause. Or second, meet up on iChat and you can show me what happens and what doesn’t happen in real time. First option requires fiddling and can be slow and somewhat frustrating, especially if you’re unfamiliar with OS X’s engine compartment! Second option is faster.
Helge, Good. At last! Thanks for your patience.

Hi Roy,
Thanks for your generosity and modesty.
I was stumped when helping two locals (Sydney Australia) install on their MacBooks (10.5.8) since my 10.6.2 was easy.
Your newly uploaded WTLib For Mac 1.2.5 did the trick.
Your brother, Paul.
P.S. Looks like the ‘direct link’ on this page is outdated (it was to 1.2.4).

Thanks Paul. I’ve added a link to the later version at the top of this post.

Hi, I am trying to load onto my mac running 10.5.8, however when I get to the point when I insert disk it freezes. any suggestions?

Hi Phil, What exactly freezes? Not your Mac, I assume.

The Watchtower program does not do anything. Once I insert the disk the download bar comes up but it never moves past around 1%. I noticed a couple error messages int the dialog box saying it was unable to create a shortcut. I am not super effecient on my mac though so I could be doing something wrong

Dear Phil, Mysterious! It’s hard to say what the problem is from your description. I recommend we meet up using iChat. You can get an Instant Messaging account for free, e.g. Google Talk if you have a Google mail account. Then perhaps I can walk through the problem with you. I’m in the GMT+0 time zone and you can get me at royratcliffe@jabber.org or royratcliffe (AOL Instant Messenger name).
