Installing 2009 edition
December 15th, 2009
Here are some notes about installing the new 2009 edition of Watchtower Library with the new version of Watchtower Library for Mac 1.3.

Be patient
It takes a little time to install. If it looks like it’s doing nothing, please wait. It will eventually complete the installation successfully. The progress bar sits still for a while. It only looks like it’s hung. The whole process takes about five minutes on a MacBook.
The right order
Note, you cannot run Setup.exe off the CD-ROM and run a library at the same time! This makes sense. The installer will make changes to the software. Hence you need to close down libraries before installing new ones.
- Run Watchtower Library for Mac without the new CD-ROM in the tray;
- close any open library editions;
- insert the new CD-ROM.
If you have the CD-ROM in the tray before running Watchtower Library for Mac, the app will notice the CD-ROM and automatically run Setup.exe. It tries to be helpful! But in this case, if your Watchtower Library for Mac auto-launches libraries, it tries to run set-up and existing libraries at the same time at launch time. Is this making sense? In that case, close the warning message, close the running libraries then manually launch Setup.exe by dragging it to the Watchtower Library for Mac dock icon.
Uninstalling the old version
The easiest way is to insert the 2008 CD-ROM. Again, you need to shut down any running libraries first. The installer will find the version already installed and ask if you want to uninstall.
Will I loose my Research Favourites?
No.

You speak of version 1.3, but it’s not in files … Am i missing something?
December 15th, 2009 at 09:49 PM
Sorry Sander. You caught me pressing the Post Article button before the upload had finished. It’s there now though.
December 16th, 2009 at 07:39 PM
haha, caught you!
December 16th, 2009 at 07:42 PM
BTW, whats new in 1.3?
December 16th, 2009 at 09:54 PM
He he! Caught me red handed!
Version 1.3 includes forward support for the upcoming 2009 edition.

Can’t wait for the 2009 version. Tonight we’ll get our new songbook!!!
December 17th, 2009 at 04:14 PM
Hi, just out of curiosity, doesn’t this violate the license agreement? I use WT Library with either Parallels or Bootcamp… This looks good but I’d like to confirm its legitimacy…
December 19th, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Mr Daniel Shortle, this is legitimitly (is there such a word…) comparable with using WT Library with Parallels or Bootcamp. Simplyfied (but not technically correct) it’s ‘just’ a fake-windows-zone to install your own CD (with the maps working!) :-)

Just installed 2009, works great. Thanks for all the hard work
December 23rd, 2009 at 02:44 AM
Thank you for a great program. 2009 is up and running fine, however whenever I open it a 2008 window opens at the same time. I tried uninstalling using the 2008 disc but to no avail. Any suggestions?
December 23rd, 2009 at 09:45 PM
Hi Jason. Can I just ask, are you closing down all Watchtower Library windows before you insert the 2008 CD to uninstall?
December 25th, 2009 at 04:49 PM
can we install 2010 version with existing download program or wait for new version ?? thanks
December 25th, 2009 at 05:37 PM

December 25th, 2009 at 05:54 PM

Hi Jan, It should be easy to install but there could be something I’m forgetting to tell brothers and sisters; so I’m happy to help. Please feel free to call me via iChat at royratcliffe (AIM) or royratcliffe@jabber.org.
December 29th, 2009 at 06:41 AM
Roy, Thanks for all of your hard work on this! It truly is an excellent program and incredibly easy to get setup. Thanks again!
December 29th, 2009 at 03:51 PM
same problem as Jan Gridelli, is it solved yet or should we wait longer ? thanks for the effort, hope for an answer Luk
December 29th, 2009 at 06:16 PM
Hi Luk, I’d love to help Jan but I can’t see how to without more information. I was hoping to meet up with her on iChat and see what’s happening via screen sharing. Perhaps we could do that too.

How do I install Watchtower Library 2009 to my ITouch 3rd Generation. I haven’t been very successful
January 2nd, 2010 at 02:11 PM
Hi Carol. I’m afraid you can’t use this with an iPhone or iTouch. However you can get a version by downloading iSilo then downloading the WT Library PDB files. These are unofficially distributed via the iPhone JW group at yahoo. You need to apply for group membership. This involves verifying details from the latest KM. Here is the link to the iPhone WT library group at Yahoo.

Hi Roy,
Just wanted to thank you for your efforts, much appreciated.

Hi, Thanks for such a wonderful program! I just installed it. I put on the English WTlib 2008 (of last year) and thereafter the Spanish WTlib 2009 (of this year). Both installed well and worked. When I started the program later on, I saw only the English WTlib 2008, the Spanish one seems to have disappeared… You have any idea what I did wrong? Thanks, Frederic
January 5th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
Frederic, When you say disappeared do you mean that it doesn’t launch automatically, or the files are no longer there, or they are there but you cannot run the Spanish edition?
January 6th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Hi Roy, the English WTlib 2008 launches automatically, but the second WTlib (in Spanish 2009) I cannot find. It’s not listed under Applications. Where do I start it from then? Or where can I find the files that have been installed to see whether the Spanish files are still present? Thanks, Frederic
January 6th, 2010 at 07:27 PM
Roy, how to uninstall 2008 without the disc? I just installed the 2009 version (works BEAUTYFULL!!).
But seems i lost the 2008 disc. Can i find the files and delete them or …? Please email me, waiting for your reply!
January 6th, 2010 at 08:53 PM
Allready found it, deleted this folder: /Users/myusername/Library/Watchtower Library
Then installed the 2009 edition again. That’s all :)
January 7th, 2010 at 06:21 PM
Frederic, You can find the virtual drive C at
/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Watchtower Library/drive_c. You can find the libraries under that directory in the normal places.Sander, I think the folder to delete is
/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Watchtower Library. But I guess you found it.January 8th, 2010 at 02:25 AM
When I download the installer it does not have frameworker folder as your video shows. I am having an issue installing the 2009 version, could this be why?
January 8th, 2010 at 02:50 AM
Tim, The video was made when the app came in two parts. Since version 1.2.5, you only have the app. The app includes the framework. Sorry about the confusion. I should re-do the video perhaps!
January 8th, 2010 at 04:32 PM
When looking at the files installed I found the Spanish version, so I tried to link it manually but it didn’t work. So I re-installed the Spanish version and now everything seems to work. Something else: can other users use the same installation of the Watchtower libraries? Or do I have to install it for every user separately? Thanks, Frederic
January 9th, 2010 at 07:30 PM
Dear Frederic, You need to be very pedantic with the pathname. The path needs to specify the
.exefile precisely otherwise no launching.Regarding sharing the same installation. Yes you can but not automatically. It requires fiddling with Aliases. Unless you really want to, I’d go for the easy option: one installation each. Half a gigabyte isn’t must space these days.
January 9th, 2010 at 08:40 PM
Hi Roy, thanks for your answer! I’d like to know about the aliases. I’m a computer scientist, so maybe I’ll manage to do it right. ;-) Frederic
January 12th, 2010 at 07:34 PM
Hey Roy, great Program! Much less hassle than the parallels-solution. Nevertheless: after installing the 2009 German version I experienced a problem: the spanish 2008 Version that was there before doesn’t work anymore. Is this maybe similar to Frederics problem? What was that about the aliases? Before the 2009 version I was running three seperate versions at once and didn’t have any problems. Thanks a lot for your help!
January 12th, 2010 at 07:39 PM
Seems an update to the most recent version did the trick. Everything works as usual now. Thanks for the great work once more!!
January 18th, 2010 at 02:35 AM
After a couple of false starts (had to manually delete 2008) The install worked perfectly! Thank you very much!!
January 18th, 2010 at 03:39 AM
Roy,
Thanks much for this. I have a Windows VM but love not having to open it to get to WTLib. Thanks for sharing the expertise.
January 23rd, 2010 at 12:31 AM
Thanks for this great application. No trubble to install. like whe say in dutch “het loopt gesmeerd
Thanks for this application. No trubble to install. Thanks very much.
January 28th, 2010 at 05:06 PM
Brother, this is not working for me. When I get to the part where I slide the Library over to applications, there is a circle with a line through the WT library. When I try to open WT Library in Applications, it says “You cannot open this application because it is not supported on this system. What am I doing worng. Thanks!
January 28th, 2010 at 06:20 PM
Frank, The ‘circle with a line through’ is temporary, if it’s what I think you mean. Finder will switch to the app icon when it updates the icon cache.
The not-supported message is another thing though. What OS are you running with?
January 28th, 2010 at 10:11 PM
I’m running 10.4.11. Probably need 10.5, huh?
January 28th, 2010 at 10:30 PM
That’s it. Tiger not supported. Sorry Frank.
January 29th, 2010 at 05:04 PM
Roy, Thanks very much for this beautiful gift. Installed it with no problem on my iMac.

Problems after uninstall: I had 3 versions installed: English, Danish & Swedish and it has all worked nicely. But when I uninstalled the Swedish version, also the two other versions ceased to function! On my computer I first uninstalled the old one and then installed then 2009 version. When I experienced these problems, I tried it the other way round on my wife’s computer: install first the Swedish version and then uninstall old version. Same result: Danish version ceased to work.
On my own computer I then installed the 2009 English version and now the English and Swedish versions work. But still not the Danish.
My guess is that when making an uninstall, some changes are made that effects all installed versions so that they won’t work anymore – could that be right?
That would be nice if you’re able to fix this problem, as I don’t get all 3 languages at the same time. As it work now, the only solution to avoid a lot of extra work is to wait until all versions have arrived, uninstall all 3 versions at the same time and then install all 3 new versions. But this is not a nice solution… :-/
BTW: every time I install a new version I have to make the changes I’ve made in Properties (and these are quite a lot!) once again. Are these changes saved in a file, so I can save the old file and then overwrite the new file with the old one, so I don’t need to do this over and over again – every year and in 3 languages…? :-(

Dear Steffen, Sorry to hear about the multi-version hassles. There must be something inadvertently removed when you uninstall, as you say. I wonder if it’s the MEPS common DLLs. It’s hard to say without having those versions myself. Are you uninstalling by re-inserting the installation CD, the standard way?
The library editions store their settings in the Windows registry at key
Software\Watchtower\MEPS\Watchtower Library 2009\E\_Default\WTE\Preferences\wt.ui.researchBrowserPlugin. But notice the version dependency. The key path includes2009. So porting over your settings is not straightforward, not as if you can copy a file.February 1st, 2010 at 10:55 PM
Greetings from Greece and thanks for the app!
I have a problem here, cant type Greek. Neither copy greek. Any solution for this? The application works perfectly but greek characters on typing is the only problem :/ Unfortunately without them i cant do search.
Thanks!
February 4th, 2010 at 12:46 PM
Hi Roy, yes, I uninstall by re-inserting the installation CD. But I think I “solved” the problem myself: I was convinced that I had the latest version of Watchtower Library for Mac installed (1.3) but I hadn’t! So I installed it at once – and the problem disappeared!
About my settings, it seems rather difficult. Maybe I should just forget about it…
A new question: I would like to install e-sword, and you state that I need to install some add-ons: “Select Add-Ons from the app menu.” Where do I find this app menu?
February 5th, 2010 at 01:27 PM
Steffen, Sorry not to reply promptly. We had the circuit visit here in Lancaster last week, plus I and eventually Rachel came down with a bad cold.
The app menu refers to the first menu on the menu bar (after the apple icon). It’s named for the app. So appears as Watchtower Library for this app. You will find the Add-Ons option there.
February 6th, 2010 at 12:21 PM
Hi Roy, that’s OK. Our next circuit visit begins on tuesday March 30 – yes, the day of the Memorial! So he’s the one to make the speech.
Well, thx for your reply. As I use Swedish as language, I didn’t think of what the app menu was…
Well, I managed to install the add-ons, and I’ve manage to install e-Sword and add it to the programs menu (as you describe here: http://projects.royratcliffe.me.uk/projects/wtlib4mac/wiki/Integrating_other_Windows_programs_with_Watchtower_Library_for_Mac) But unfortunatey it won’t start, whether I use the shortcut or click in the programs menu. Have any idea what may be wrong?
February 6th, 2010 at 04:47 PM
Roy any solution for the greek character issue that i described some posts above ?
Thanks :)
February 7th, 2010 at 06:46 PM
Dear Steffen, Hope you have a good visit. The app does have a Swedish localisation. The menus should appear in your language.
Regarding e-Sword, I wonder if your path is correct. I mean, it needs to be precisely specified in the launch path. Try dragging the
exefile to the Watchtower Library dock icon. This launches it too.Dear Stephen, I think the Greek should work. I made some changes previously to support Greek. What Input Method are you using? I tested it on Greek polytonic and Greek something-else-I-can’t-remember.
February 7th, 2010 at 11:35 PM
Roy thanks for the reply!
My input method is Greek. But it denys writing anything on Greek. I can write with english characters but not greek. Also i cant paste anything on searh field at any languange.
February 8th, 2010 at 07:07 AM
Ah, here’s the thing. Are you switching to Greek input method before launching the app (Watchtower Library for Mac app)? You need to switch to Greek first, then launch.
Reason is: the Wine keyboard module only configures itself at the start.
February 8th, 2010 at 09:48 AM
Hi Roy, really appreciate this software. However… I had 2008 installed fine, great. Updated to 1.3 and 2009 all went well. But, I never had the congregation book study schedule on the 2009 editin after about week of 14th Jan. I assumed this was still somehow taking info from the 08 edition so i deleted 2009 and the emulator software to start a fresh. I have the WT Library emulator back on but now the install disc goes to install 2009 but stops just a the verifying installer gets to 100%. What can i do and what errors have i made and why could i not see the Cong. bible study schedule before?
Many thanks Andrew
February 8th, 2010 at 03:13 PM
Roy thank you again for the reply.
Unfortunately that trick also doesnt work. I have tried that from the first day. The program is perfect, fonts, navigation just everything. But cant type anything in Greek, so cant search anything on search field :/ Have tried greek and greek polyphonic but nothing.
I dont want to make you spent time for this. If during this year you check this and make a fix please post it here. I check this blog every day. Greetings from Greece and thanks for everyting :)
February 9th, 2010 at 08:24 AM
Yes I’m quite sure that the path is right: C:\Program Files\e-Sword\e-Sword.exe. And dragging the exe file to the Watchtower Library dock icon doesn’t do the trick either – nothing happens.
February 14th, 2010 at 01:35 AM
Hi Roy, I tried to email at the royratcliffe@jabber.org but didn’t go through this is the issue I’m facing: I was able to install WTL 2008 on my Mac with your help. You felt it would be best to make a copy of the disk then try to download from the new CD, which worked. Well I tried to install 2009 and the CD just spins and spits out. A friend fellow Mac user said it could be easier just to copy the CD to a thumb drive as an iso file, om my PC then use the thumb drive to download from there. Well I have the program saved on my thumb drive but can’t seem to get your program to read it.
February 16th, 2010 at 07:54 PM
Andrew, The cong study schedule only appears on the CD-ROM for the first few weeks. I guess this is all the information that the Society have before they release the disc.
Stephen, So sorry that Roy hasn’t got back to you on this problem. He’s been quite busy recently. He says the best thing to do is contact him directly via his iChat accounts. His AIM is royratcliffe and his Jabber royratcliffe@Jabber.org. There may be a problem he hasn’t fixed.
Steffen, Same as above, please feel welcome to contact Roy directly to help you.
Stephanie, Roy’s Jabber address applies to iChat or another instant messenger. I think a good thing to try would be to borrow another brothers CD-ROM. This has happened before with others. We have found that using another copy generally works.

I am having problems to download v1.3 using url: http://projects.royratcliffe.me.uk/attachments/download/71/Watchtower_Library_for_Mac_v1.3.dmg. Can you please send to my e-mail or provide me a diferente url? Thanks for your help.
