Installer Splash

December 22nd, 2009

A kind brother tactfully brought something to my attention this afternoon. Watchtower Library for Mac installer uses the official library splash screen. Never thought about this before, but it makes it look official, which of course it isn’t! Didn’t think about that, funnily enough. Silly me. London branch wisely advise discretion.

So here’s the plan: change it! Big question is, What to?

Suggestions

What should the installer display?
  1. A picture of a library?
  2. My smiling face? (No!)
  3. Nothing?
  4. Any other ideas?

Mockup

Here’s a quick mockup using the old Watchtower library for Mac icon; originally built using a 3D render of books skinned with textures from photos of actual books from our library. But is this overstepping legal requirements too? I wonder.

Feedback very welcome

Please post any comments or feedback below.

Better still, if you are a talented artist please feel free to post me a design for inclusion in the next version (probably 1.3.1). Of course, all the usual caveats apply: no Watchtower or open-Bible symbols; it should keep clear of infringing the society’s legal requirements and those of others too. Please refer to Kingdom Ministry April 2009, p. 4 Question box.

    3. Nothing IS OK. Most of the application I install uses no banner – just the application and the “Applications”-shortcut. But for the Icon – I don’t know… yet.

  2. bob Says:

I agree, nothing is an option, no banner, just the bottom part that shows the icons and directions to drag and drop on app folder.

  3. Andrew Says:

Nothing sounds fine to me too. I’m afraid the icon needs a bit of work though. I just don’t think it looks right. If I were any good at designing icons myself, I would. I’ll give it a try though. (I kept the old one a it looks much better in the dock – but it changes when I run WTLib!)

  4. Craig Says:

Nothing would work… and ditto on the older icon… Still use it.

  5. Roy Says:

So, nothing is preferred for the splash. Regarding the icon, are you saying that you prefer the older application icon?

  6. Craig Says:

    Yes…clearer, cleaner, less cluttered…

Question. I have run update for 2009 (on snow leopard) What do I do after running the upgrade? When I insert the WT disc it just ejects it without installing the cd contents. What am I missing? Many many thanks for creating this very easy to use resource for mac users! DK

  8. Roy Says:

Duane, If the installer does not launch automatically, try dragging Setup.exe from the CD to the Watchtower Library’s dock icon.

Have you tried a free small program called Slip Cover from Bohemian Encoding it allows you to convert any picture into an Icon. by opening it up in preview you can then save the icon as a PNG preserving the alpha channel to use as an image.

Please have a look at http://chris-watts.com/Music.html as an example of how you can use it.

    The website is http://www.bohemiancoding.com/slipcover/

More templates for free here http://www.dustinschau.com/mint/pepper/tillkruess/downloads/tracker.php?url=http%3A//files.dustinschau.com/Downloads/Mac/StarterPack.zip&remote

    And even more here http://www.iconpaper.org/category/mac/icons/slipcover-icons-mac/

Some of them would not be appropriate but some you could use.

    Also other links http://www.bohemiancoding.com/slipcover/cases/index.html

And also instructions on how to create your own http://www.bohemiancoding.com/slipcover/cases/create%20your%20own.html

This may be of some help, but it might not be any help but I thought I would put it forward. And by the way thank you for all your hard work for us Mac users. ANy chance of an iPad version when it comes in March or April?

Dear Chris, Thanks for the great suggestions. No, I didn’t know about Slip Cover. Nice to learn about it. Thank you. Your site is very attractive too. I’ll probably go with a splash-free installer for the next version though.

An iPad version would be great. I agree. It’s the same problem as iPhone though. The society will need to do that port. Only they have access to the source code.

    Hi Roy,

    Thank you for your response.

Box Shot 3D is a Mac compatible software that is quite versatile. This is an excellent tool for creating quick graphics and could be used without using society graphic designs.

I was thinking if you used some books standing up with a small watchtower on each end like bookends,....

Hi Roy, I was reading about the logo issue. How about a similar iPhone app logo, but with a simple “JW” over a “LIB” and a nice color background? I think that is simple enought to understand the program.
