X11User.pkg missing on Snow Leopard
January 12th, 2010
Thanks to Tony Balaski of Toronto, a curious issue relating to X11 has come to light. X11User.pkg (i.e. X11 user package) may be missing on some Snow Leopard machines! This may apply, in particular, to machines upgraded to Snow Leopard.
The problem
You might find that although you think you have X11 installed, some Snow Leopard machines may not have X11 correctly or entirely installed.
This creates a small dilemma. Xquartz does not have a version compatible with Snow Leopard yet. If you try to install version 2.3.3.2, the closest version to the Apple version, the installer complains about OS version and will exit. And on top of that, Apple do not provide a link to Snow Leopard’s X11User.pkg on their website—or at least I haven’t been able to find one.
The solution
Locate and insert your Snow Leopard installation DVD. Select Optional Installs then check X11. This installs X11User.pkg containing the necessary X11 components for OS X 10.6.
Emergency
If you’re having problems, can’t find the installation DVD, please feel free to contact me via iChat at royratcliffe (AIM account) or royratcliffe@jabber.org (Jabber acount).

You’re welcome Sander. Did you find the same problem?

Hi Roy, Thank you so much for your program. We love it. Unfortunately, we’re having the same problem as our friend, Tony. I have the installation DVD, however, it doesn’t give me an option to install x11, only Xcode. Have you any suggestions? Thanks, Jonathan and Heidi

Dear Heidi, Let me have another look. Maybe my instructions are not clear.
You see a folder called
Optional Installs. Double click this. Then you see Xcode and Optional Installs. Double-click the latter.Or do you mean that your DVD does not have any mention of Optional Installs?

Hi Roy, Thank you for your hard work proiding this application for the mac usrs. I have an old iMac power pc G4 1ghz, 1g RAM running mac os x 10.3.9. Unfortunatly your application doesn’t work with this version of mac os x. Do you think that this configuration I can install snow leopard? If not do you hav any suggestions? Thanks

Dear Laurent, Sorry to say no: You will need an Intel-based Mac to run Watchtower Library. It’s actually just a Microsoft Windows program so expects to run on a 386-type processor. The only thing I can recommend is a new or reconditioned Mac.

Hi Roy, We tried everything, optional installs, even specifically checking x11 in applications, tried xcode just in case, still no success with Snow Leopard. Tried downloading 1.3 but the computer is indicating that I don’t have permissions. Contemplating throwing the computer out the window. Is there another option? :)

Dear Heidi,
Please don’t throw your computer out the window. But I know how you feel.
Do you have the 2009 edition and 1.3 on your Snow Leopard machine? You should have an ideal combination. What’s the message that you see? Call me up at royratcliffe (AIM) before launching your Mac!

Roy I think your application is fantastic however I have been have been having problems opening up the WT it takes sometimes 5min or so to load up.
I’m on a 2.4ghz snow leopard mac book pro.
Any ideas would really be welcome.

You have a good system Calvin. There’s no shortage of computing capability. The delay must be something else. I wonder if it’s audio. Could you check your Console utility to see what the message(s) appears just before, during and just after the delay. On some systems I’ve noted MIDI-related 32/64-bit compatibility messages associated with a short delay. I’ve never seen a delay on the order of minutes however. Perhaps your Console log will shed some light.

Love the program, but I’ve been having more problems than success this week with it. I often find it doesn’t finish opening after clicking on the dock icon which does bounce, but then nothing more happens. I usually find it listed in the Force Quit listing as Not Responding and then I have to force quit.
Any ideas? Thanks, Alan in NH USA

Hi Alan, Sounds like you have X11 missing. Check in your Applications>Utilities folder. If you see X11, double click it. If it runs, you have X11 installed correctly. If not, you find it on your OS X installation DVD. Kind regards, Roy.

Andreas, Can I just check that you have loaded your official Library. We don’t include this with the package out of respect for copyright.

Roy;
Thanks for the work. The WT library install went well and while it’a a bit slow opening It will be even better when I can remove VMWare from my laptop. (I need the disc space)
I do have one question though. I successfully installed Kingdom hall schedules but ran into a problem. the command line which requires the correct path to launch the program has the wrong information.
The wine file show that C:\Majestic Software\KHS\ is the path where the program is located but using that path doesn’t work.
If anyone has the correct path and the final steps to complete the process I would be grateful.

Works well on the first user account. Other accounts on the same workstation complains that the wtlib cd is not present.

BJ, The program doesn’t share it’s data with the other accounts. You will need to install it each time with each separate account.

Hi Kieran, It’s a strange one. I think we’ll have to meet up via iChat and Screen Sharing, so I can see what’s happening or not happening. I’m at royratcliffe (AIM) or royratcliffe@jabber.org (Jabber) or roy.ratcliffe (Skype).
