Mysterious problems with CD-ROMs
January 5th, 2010
Quite a few brothers and sisters have been experiencing somewhat mysterious problems. These include, but not limited to,
- The
Setup.exeinstaller program taking a very long time to complete before finally spitting out code-like messages! - Messages from the library itself saying, either
- “Watchtower Library has experienced a problem and cannot continue,” or
- “The program WTLibrary.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience!”
- Crashing when you try to view the Good Land brochure!
What to do
If you experience installation problems or even post-installation issues, please try someone else’s CD-ROM, i.e. someone who has successfully installed the library.
Sometimes the combination of one particular CD-ROM and one particular DVD or CD drive gives rise to unusual errors. So you might also try creating a Disk Image on another machine (for personal use only of course). Then use the image with the machine that you’re having troubles with.

For what its worth, I’ve just successfully installed the 2009 version of WTLib on my mac. See the Good Land is showing up perfectly.

Roy, So far I haven’t been getting good success with the 2009 Wt Lib. I keep getting the “Watchtower Library has experienced a problem and cannot continue” Error, on Both my macs. I tried Disk image and the cdrom… anyother suggestions or should I wait for more Disc to appear in my congregation?

Grant, That sounds like a disk image corruption problem. Do you have another disk or image you can try, even a 2008-edition just for a test?

Roy, I was able to install 2008, I don’t have any other 2009 disc avaiable to me yet I think we will be getting a shipment in soon. Seems odd so many are having this problem oh well.

I have personally set up quite a few systems for brs and srs and found that the new CD-ROM is the problem. Something must be finicky about this particular production batch. When you keep trying to make a disk image on different CD drives you might be successful. Once you do, hang on to that file so you can help others. This application as well as Parallels, VMWare and also real PCs have issues with it.

Tony, I think you are right. I’ve seen very odd problems. Errors which relate directly to corruption in files copied to the hard disk. I’ve experienced it personally, and done a bit-wise comparison of the directory tree. Result: copy errors. So I’m also convinced of CD production issues.

Roy, for the record, I installed cdly09-E a few minutes ago, on this iMac 9,1, running Snow Leopard, and with cdly08-E and cdly08-U installed previously. I ensured that the Watchtower Library version 1.2.5 program was running first, and the install proceeded automatically. The only minor problem found so far is that the installer appeared to stall for 3 or 4 minutes. Upon careful inspection, the CD-ROM could still be heard, quietly spinning during this period, and hard disk drive activity could also be heard. As reported, the install suddenly completed over a few seconds, and the 2009 program booted before I hit the ‘Finish’ button. The Library appears to be running normally, and gl booklet maps are useable without any apparent instabilities. Installs will now be carried out on our laptops, and if you do get another report from me, please assume that we have encountered no serious problems. Thank-you.

Apologies for the missing ‘not’ in the previous post. All installs appear to have worked properly. Thank-you.

Richard, One thing to note: the 2009 edition will require version 1.3 in order to set up the Applications menu correctly. There is a subtle change in the way Watchtower Libraries record their registry settings starting with 2009.

Roy – firstly thank you for your wonderful work with this. It’s much appreciated! I also had the ‘mysterious CD problem’ with a slight twist that my Macbook Pro would simply churn the CD for a few seconds then spit it out. Oddly, the disc worked fine in my Mac Desktop. Simply ‘duplicating’ the CD on my Desktop machine, then burning that to a disc solved the problem.

I simply copy the WT Library files to a folder on the desktop or to a flash drive and install from there. It is actually very convenient to have it on a flash drive if you need to install to more than one computer. The install is very quick when a CD is not involved.
